In the red…

…And don’t they know it.  You just had to look at the faces of the Queensland Reds players on Friday night after they went down to the Lions 18-17.

With six injured players making their Super Rugby comeback, it was a ‘sure thing’.  The spark was there, but they somehow couldn’t get across the line.

So what keeps going wrong? That’s the million-dollar question on most, if not all, Super Rugby followers’ lips.

All eyes are on Richard Graham.  After leading the team to five losses out of six matches, the Queenslanders are starting to look a bit too comfortable at the bottom of the ladder.  So the question must be asked, is Richard Graham the right man for the job?

Before we go pointing any Graham dissing fingers, I think it’s worth looking at the other Australian Super Rugby franchises and considering how they would cope without eight of their best rugby players.

The Brumbies without Kurindrani, Speight, Moore, Pocock, Tomane, Toomua… Need I go on?  Or the reigning champs without Hoops, Folau, ACC, Palu, Jackpot, Foley – it seems inconceivable.  It’s not worth even mentioning the Force or the Rebels, because both teams would struggle to field even a ‘second choice’ team.

Nonetheless, there’s only so many get out of jail free cards Graham and his Reds are allowed.  Friday night was their first chance to redeem themselves and, while there were some glimmers of hope, people’s patience is starting to run thin. This week sees the return of Gill and possibly Simmons and Hunt from the bench and then the likes of Beau Robinson, Ed O’Donoghue and Ed Quirk will add some starch of 160 Super Rugby caps later in the season.

All eyes will be on AAMI Park on Friday night, as the Reds take centre stage against the Rebels.  They can probably get away with blaming last week’s poor performance on a lack of preparation time, but this week is the final straw, because frankly, they’re all out of excuses to hide behind. One certainty is that the Rebels won’t go easy and their ‘wolf-pack’ of McMahon, Higgers and Fuglistaller will revel in the occasion.

Put simply, the Reds must hit their straps this week if they are to have even the slenderest chances of making the Finals come season’s end.  Either they lift their game (literally) or Graham goes. There’s no question to it.

Love,

Ladies who League
